Sustainable Threads from Agriculture Waste: A New Path for Entrepreneurs

In a progressive stride toward sustainable innovation and rural entrepreneurship, a three-day Entrepreneurship Development Workshop on Fibre Extraction from Banana Pseudostem under the compelling theme “Sustainable Threads from Agriculture Waste” commenced on June 19, 2025, at the Auditorium Hall, New P.G. Block, Department of Botany, Dhanamanjuri University, Thangmeiband, Imphal West, Manipur.

This unique workshop is jointly organized by the Department of Botany, D.M. College of Science, under Dhanamanjuri University (DMU), Manipur, and the Manipur Technology Innovation Hub (MTI-HUB). It is powered by ChanKorb Pvt. Ltd., a rising name in sustainable enterprise solutions.

Inaugural Ceremony Highlights

The inaugural session was graced by esteemed dignitaries and academic stalwarts.Prof. W. Chandbabu Singh served as the Chief Guest, emphasizing the critical role of academic institutions in transforming agricultural by-products into viable business ventures.

The Guests of Honor included: Dr. Rajiv Kangabam, Lead at Manipur Technology Innovation Hub, who highlighted the need to build innovation-based entrepreneurship rooted in Manipur’s natural resources. Prof. L. Hemchandra Singh, Dean, School of Life Sciences, DMU, who reflected on the scientific potential of banana pseudostem fiber in eco-textiles. Prof. KSH. Birbal Singh, Principal and Dean, School of Human & Environmental Science, DMU, who encouraged youth participation in green economy initiatives.

The session was presided over by Prof. Athokpam Pinokiyo, Head of the Department of Botany, D.M. College of Science, who welcomed all participants and reaffirmed the department's commitment to fostering hands-on learning and rural entrepreneurship.

Why Banana Pseudostem?

Banana plants are typically discarded after harvesting, leaving behind the pseudostem—an underutilized yet valuable source of natural fiber. With rising concerns about synthetic pollution and fast fashion’s carbon footprint, the exploration of banana fiber as a sustainable material holds great promise. This workshop bridges the gap between scientific knowledge, technology, and enterprise.

What to Expect in the 3-Day Workshop?

Running from June 19 to 21, 2025, the workshop offers a comprehensive, hands-on learning experience for aspiring entrepreneurs and artisans. Participants can expect:

  • Introduction to Banana Pseudostem Fibre – understanding its properties, environmental benefits, and market potential.

  • Practical Sessions on Fibre Utilization Techniques – learning methods of processing and preparing fiber for various applications.

  • Demonstration on the Use of Banana Fibre in Handicraft Products – showcasing how fiber can be transformed into creative and functional items.

  • Crafting Sessions – hands-on crafting of mats, decorative items, and other eco-products.

  • Product Finishing Techniques – training on enhancing the durability and aesthetics of finished goods.

  • Display Setup – tips on product presentation for exhibitions and market readiness.

  • Workshed Visit & Live Demonstration – live observation of the fiber extraction process, orientation to specialized machines, and interactive sessions with local artisans to gain insights into traditional knowledge blended with modern techniques.

This immersive program is designed to equip participants with both the technical know-how and entrepreneurial insight to explore banana fiber as a viable business opportunity in sustainable craft and textile sectors.
